Place Matters: Longwood University Master Plan 2025 envisioned architectural interventions to Johns and Moss Halls (formerly Curry and Frazer Halls) in order to improve their appearance and bring much-needed architectural cohesion to the campus. Visible for miles in all directions, the two residence halls are among Longwood’s most recognizable features and play an essential role in the strong residential college community the University aspires to be. The original buildings were designed to turn their backs on Main Street, presenting a foreboding presence to Farmville and are not in keeping with Longwood’s high standards of architectural character. Along with firms LITTLE Diversified and Franck & Lohsen, Cooper Robertson has brought the Master Plan vision to life, with complete renovations to both buildings – stripping them down to their structure - and surrounding landscape and hardscape underway, including a new public plaza between the two towers that makes for a welcoming gateway and connection to the surrounding community. The two, ten-story residence halls accommodate 400 students each in 246,620 square feet. This $58M capital improvement to the University is its largest expenditure ever since the residential halls were first built, and a major first step in the implementation of the master plan.
